Council President Theo Gregory said he wants to rename the playground "One Love Park," after the hit song by the internationally-known reggae artist, who briefly lived in Wilmington during the mid 60s.

The Jamaica native lived across from the park in a rental home at 2313 Tatnall Street and worked in a Chrysler plant and as a DuPont lab assistant. He then returned to Jamaica and enjoyed a successful career until his death from cancer at the age of 36.

Gregory said a constituent approached him about renaming the park to help change attitudes within the surrounding community.

"I think you have to accentuate the positive, we talk about faith, hope and love and I think that hope is very much something that we need to embrace in our community as a culture," he said.

The measure will be introduced at next week's council meeting and then heads to a committee.

A vote on the ordinance isn't expected until early March.
