Thousands attended the 36th annual steeplechase at Winterthur, just north of Wilmington. Brief moments of sunshine even prompted applause from the crowd.
But, of course, fashion was just as important as the horses, as most patrons were dressed in their finest preppy and pastel attire.
The day's pageantry included big hats, fancy tailgates, antique cars and elegant carriages.
Proceeds will benefit year-round programming at Winterthur, the former estate of Henry Francis du Pont which is known for its collection of decorative arts, gardens and research library.
