WDEL's Mellany Armstrong reports.
"An intense experience on the side of Route One."
WSTW's Joe Alan found out 20 minutes from the birthing center in Wilmington that his daughter wasn't going to wait that long.
"And we just got over the bridge in Middletown on Route 1, and she's like, 'The baby's coming, the baby's coming, pull over, the baby's coming," he said.
Joe's wife Melissa delivered Bayleigh Kait in the back seat of Joe's brand-new Mazda 3.
"So we pulled over, and I helped her get into the back seat, and sure enough, the baby was coming, the baby was there. So we called 911 and got them on the phone in the car, and they tried to walk us through it and we did it all on the side of the road, just the two of us," he said.
"I wouldn't say I panicked, but I was just certainly very, very nervous about delivering the child myself in the back of a car on the side of a highway at night," he said.
He has a great story to tell his new baby, who joins 3-year-old big brother Grayson in the family.
"I'm thinking about hanging onto the Mazda until she's 16, so she can drive that old car around and tell everyone she was born in it," he said.
Bayleigh Kait was born at 10:39 p.m., 7 pounds 4 ounces. She joins big brother Grayson, and mom and baby are doing well.
