VIDEO: Check out the Delaware Art Museum's new performance art exhibit. For the first time, performance art is on display at the Delaware Art Museum, in a new exhibit that opens to the public Saturday.
WDEL's Amy Cherry checked it out.
"Performance Now" isn't about just walking around, watching videos, and taking in the art. Instead, you're encouraged to be a part of the art-making.
"Certainly the audience can become an active participant in some of the performance art pieces," said Margaret Winslow, associate curator of contemporary art at the Delaware Art Museum.
You'll also get your exercise!
"Our visitors are invited to hula hoop along with the performers in the video; she gives us instructions, and there's a catchy Chinese pop song that provides musical accompaniment," said Winslow.
The videos in the exhibit display a broad range of performance art from theatrics to the physicality of the body.
Performance art is becoming more popular. Winslow says the art form has been recognized by many as the most significant mode of art-making today.
"Performance art departments ate being established in major museums, it's being embraced by colleges, and it felt timely to bring it to our audience here at the Delaware Art Museum," she said.
You have until September 21, 2014 to catch the exhibit.
